As is readily apparent, several of the greens haven’t fully recovered from the dreaded winter kill. Consequently Gary will soon undertake a major repair of the damaged areas by tilling, re-firming the base and sprigging. Fertilization and chemical treatment will be applied to promote growth. Naturally the newly sprigged areas will not be playable until grown in. In addition, certain areas around the course that haven’t grown in as expected will be sodded. These areas will be marked as unplayable, i.e., ground under repair, from which relief must be taken to prevent damage to the sod until it has taken firm hold. Otherwise the course has benefited from frequent rains and normal irrigation when necessary along with warm (hot!) weather and is in great condition. |

Tournament play in June included an ever popular Community Golf Scramble. The team of Ken Brace, Ray Naramore, Lee Nightingale and Joe Souza took first place honors with a 59. They were followed closely by the teams of John Andrews, Jason (“Boom-Boom”) Chambers, Harry Goldthorpe and Tom Murphy along with the “W Team” – Andrew Wilson, Mike & Mimi Wittkamp and Dean Wood who recorded 60s. Fran & Donna Imbrescia paired with Craig & Kim Matthews to win the couples division with a 61. And the ladies division was won by Gina DeLowrey, Louise Latsko, Lana Sadler and Laurie Sprecher with a 64.
Hook A Kid came to Cedar Creek again during the last week of June. Led by Larry Peyser and his staff and hosted by Mike D. and Kenny E., the many youngsters learned the fundamentals of golf and the joy of a lifetime of playing. Volunteers who assisted during the week and due a big “thank you” include Rich Egge, Mike Lesick, Bill Robinson, Rob Rosche, Art & Bev Schuenemann, Art Sotak, Peter Stephenson and Burt & Joan Wronsky.

Sadly the signature course tree on #17 is not looking well. Suffering from the effects of a lightning strike years ago, a couple of ice storms and due likely to age as well, its boughs are browning and dropping their needles – a near certain sign it is dying.
The winter kill saga is becoming an old refrain. Several of the greens have recovered nicely, but others suffer yet the effects of the cruel temperature swings earlier in the year. Gary and his staff are applying the best turf management practices and probably some that haven’t even been invented yet to aid in their recovery. It’s simply going to take time. Meanwhile, the course can’t absorb any more precipitation. The low-lying areas of the front nine are thoroughly saturated. Controlled use of carts is necessary which is to say adherence to the “cart path only” rule. The rain has also affected mowing schedules including the greens as well as bunker care. It will be days with no rain before the mowers get to some fairways.

Time is short, but there are still a couple of days to sign up for the Double Header tournament on Saturday, June 2nd. Proceeds from the event support the Aiken Baseball Academy Showcase team and local resident Joshua Ray in his pursuit of a baseball scholarship and career. The ladies 18-hole golf group plays every Thursday throughout the year. Their annual schedule includes a variety of enjoyable formats. Members as well as guests are welcome to join for a competitive and congenial experience at the Creek. Post-round lunches and good-natured commiserations on the day’s play are common at the grille. Any of the group’s officers (Cookie Caruso, Mimi Wittkamp, Pat Shealy, Marge DePalermo) or tournament committee members (Louise Latsko, Ann Marie Cox, Carolyn Davis, Jeanne Scarton) will be happy to introduce newcomers to the group.

It is spring, isn’t it? Some days? One can hardly tell by the run of weather. And frustrating it is for Gary and his crew who are trying to guess what affect the weather may have next on course growth and maintenance. Greens aeration was delayed by a rain spell and below normal temps have hampered their recovery and growth not to mention an earlier algae issue. Other course work including mowing has now begun, but wet conditions necessitate prudence so as not to damage fairways and greens surrounds as is evident from golf cart travel in muddy areas.

Cedar Creek along with The Aiken Golf Club were proud hosts for the Carolinas High School Invitational on March 23-25. Twenty-four high school teams – 118 guys and 2 gals – with their coaches supported by hundreds of family and friends from throughout the Carolinas competed for both team and individual honors. Thanks to Gary and his crew’s meticulous care over the winter and in spite of the run of cold weather in early-February we’ll soon be seeing a lot of green around the course. This is also the time for application of pre- and post-emergent herbicides (done!) and fertilizer to greens, fairways and tees. Replenishment of bunker sand has been completed. Mowers will soon be traversing the greens and up and down the fairways and tees. This is a good time for reminder to give a little extra attention to ball marks on the greens and filling fairway and tee divots all of which will aid in spring growth and a better groomed course through the summer. (The new bunker sand would appreciate attention, too.)

As conveyed in Jim’s recent letter to members and others, huge thanks are due Greg Oates and his principal helpers Mickey Finn, Greg Pasco and Paul Haring along with the many donors and volunteers for their generous support. A plaque inscribed with the names of all will soon appear in the new lounge.
A reception attended by the many donors and volunteers was hosted by Michael and Andrea prior to the official opening during which splendid reviews were accorded all around. As for the grille and lounge and as with any undertaking of the sort, there have been a couple hiccups in bringing service back to normal. Hours of operation will remain the same as before, but the grille will be operating with a limited menu for another week or so. There should be no further difficulties with bar service. Watch for further announcements and news on the grille web page:

Gary and his crew remain hard as work with winter course chores. Much underbrush has been removed and clearing of trees particularly in the areas of the 15th green and 16th tee has improved the look of the course. Installation of hole posts and markers at the tees is on the agenda and bunkers will be replenished with sand in coming weeks. Course equipment refurbishment is well complete in preparation for the growing season ahead. January has not been kind weather-wise which has impeded morning work not to mention play, but it can only get better!

Huge thanks to all who contributed to the Cedar Creek employee Christmas fund. The staff and maintenance guys are truly grateful and wish you much enjoyable playing time and many good rounds at both Cedar Creek and The Aiken Golf Club.
With Gary and his staff’s excellent work the course will remain in good condition through the cold weather months. The crew is busy daily clearing and cleaning Mother Nature’s debris throughout the course. Gary will also be completing projects put off from the busy summer season.
If you haven’t renewed your membership and handicap service now is the time to do so. It is especially important that your handicap service be renewed as soon as you can possibly do it and preferably by January 10th. Annual rates were announced previously and are available at the pro shop counter. Mike D. and the pro shop staff are there to help.
The Holiday Raffle was a huge success. The drawing resulted in first prize being awarded to Jim Mitchell. Bill Setter won second and Ken Sabol third.
The grille is now closed and renovation of the members’ room for expansion of the grille and construction of the new lounge area has begun. Reopening hasn’t been determined yet. Please bear with us while the renovation is undertaken. Club members, guests and other patrons are certain to be pleased with the result.
In the meantime and in conjunction with construction of the new bar and its back face there will be a need for new lounge stools. Pledges are being accepted from club members and others for the cost of individual stools – as many as 30 – which through special arrangement and substantial discount at The Furniture Connection in Aiken is $150 each. If more than 30 pledges are attained the additional contributions will be applied toward the cost of renovation. The names of all contributors will be engraved on a commemorative plaque in the new lounge. A pledge form is located in the pro shop. If you wish to pledge please do so by the end of January. Thank you in advance!

We’ve reached the season of little or no growth around the course. However, tees, fairways and greens will hold their color and remain in better condition through the colder weather months. Roughs will brown out and become less coarse. Over the next couple of months Gary and his crew will be undertaking projects delayed from the busy course maintenance months. Please be mindful to fill tee and fairway divots even if they are not yours. Ball marks on the greens may be noticeable also and in need of repair. A little extra attention to the course during the cold weather months will insure better growth and playing conditions in the spring.

As many already know, Jim commissioned a major renovation of the clubhouse grille which will be undertaken in January. In brief, the wall behind the present grille bar will be removed to open the area into what is now the Members Room, which will become the new bar/lounge area thereby enlarging the dining area. The “prime contractor” is master craftsman Greg Oates shown here who is constructing the new lounge cabinetry and bar. The grille and lounge upgrade will be an added attraction for lunch and dinner, community gatherings and other activities.
Julia will hold a Christmas sale at the pro shop on Saturday, December 9th, from 4 to 6 p.m. Summer merchandise is drastically marked down and there will be special prices on all fall and winter wear. Stop by the pro shop and pick up that special item for your Christmas gift list.

Annual membership rates and daily guest fees for Cedar Creek have been announced and were previously emailed to the club’s many loyal members and others. CCGC members will continue to enjoy full golf membership privileges at The Aiken Golf Club and vice versa. The annual range plan is now known as the Preferred Player Program and will continue as before – a card-based “membership” that entitles holders to unlimited use of the range in addition to two 18-hole green fees per month (cart fee required) at either Cedar Creek or The Aiken Golf Club. An added feature is unused rounds from one month may be carried over to successive months but may not be used in advance of an indicated month.
In the spirit of the season and as a way to show our appreciation for the loyalty and dedication of the pro shop staff, cart guys and grounds crew to members and guests of the club contributions to a Christmas fund are invited, which Jim will distribute to those who extended their best efforts along with friendly greetings and smiles throughout the past year. If you so choose please leave your contribution with the pro shop staff by Monday, December 18th.
The Cedar Creek ladies 18-hole group closed out another enjoyable season on November 16th with a 9-hole scramble followed by a delightful lunch and awards ceremony at the Grille. The teams were very evenly matched as there was a three-way tie – Judy Long, Cindy Stein, Louanne Langmo & Mary Haring; Jan Pacific, Deb Ridgeway & Judy Farley; and Louise Latsko, Jean Arnold & Jeanne Scarton. Officers for 2017 are Kathy Gilliland, President; Cookie Caruso, Vice President; Marge DePalermo, Secretary and Pat Shealy, Treasurer. Tournament chairs are Louise Latsko, Ann Marie Cox, Jeanne Scarton and Carolyn Davis. Louise will also serve as Handicap Chair, and Louanne Langmo returns as Sunshine Chair.
Most improved golfers for 2017 were Bill Todd and Linda King. Congrats to both!
The annual Trifecta tournament was held on its customary day after Thanksgiving. The event features two-person teams and three types of play – 6 holes each of scramble, modified alternate shot and better ball. The event was conducted with two divisions – men and couples. John Muir and Heather Paddison won the couples division followed by Pete and Jan Pacific. Jimmy Lebert and Greg Priest scored a convincing win in the men’s division with four teams tied for second – Johnny Guyton & Bill Todd, Don Arbaugh & Wayne Ussery, Dennis Conrad & Bill Puz, and Andrew Wilson & Dean Wood. Closest to the pin awards went to Jan Pacific, Walt Koertge and Bill Puz.

The annual range plan is now known as the Preferred Player Program and will continue as before – a card-based “membership” that entitles holders to unlimited use of the range in addition to two 18-hole green fees per month (cart fee required) at either Cedar Creek or The Aiken Golf Club. An added feature is unused rounds from one month may be carried over to successive months but may not be used in advance of an indicated month.
In the spirit of the season and as a way to show our appreciation for the loyalty and dedication of the pro shop staff, cart guys and grounds crew to members and guests of the club contributions to a Christmas fund are invited, which Jim will distribute to those who extended their best efforts along with friendly greetings and smiles throughout the past year. If you so choose please leave your contribution with the pro shop staff by Monday, December 18th.
The Cedar Creek ladies 18-hole group closed out another enjoyable season on November 16th with a 9-hole scramble followed by a delightful lunch and awards ceremony at the Grille. The teams were very evenly matched as there was a three-way tie – Judy Long, Cindy Stein, Louanne Langmo & Mary Haring; Jan Pacific, Deb Ridgeway & Judy Farley; and Louise Latsko, Jean Arnold & Jeanne Scarton. Officers for 2017 are Kathy Gilliland, President; Cookie Caruso, Vice President; Marge DePalermo, Secretary and Pat Shealy, Treasurer. Tournament chairs are Louise Latsko, Ann Marie Cox, Jeanne Scarton and Carolyn Davis. Louise will also serve as Handicap Chair, and Louanne Langmo returns as Sunshine Chair.
Most improved golfers for 2017 were Bill Todd and Linda King. Congrats to both!
The annual Trifecta tournament was held on its customary day after Thanksgiving. The event features two-person teams and three types of play – 6 holes each of scramble, modified alternate shot and better ball. The event was conducted with two divisions – men and couples. John Muir and Heather Paddison won the couples division followed by Pete and Jan Pacific. Jimmy Lebert and Greg Priest scored a convincing win in the men’s division with four teams tied for second – Johnny Guyton & Bill Todd, Don Arbaugh & Wayne Ussery, Dennis Conrad & Bill Puz, and Andrew Wilson & Dean Wood. Closest to the pin awards went to Jan Pacific, Walt Koertge and Bill Puz.
The club will host a community golf outing on Saturday, December 16th. Details together with registration are open at the pro shop.

The course is in superb condition! The greens are like fine carpet, fairways are plush and tees as good as they get. The growing season is nearing end, but thanks to Gary and his crew’s painstaking maintenance the course will remain a gem to play through the cold weather months. Gary has also overseeded the range with winter rye; look for it to sprout in a week or two and we’ll have a green range through the winter. Enjoy your play ….and bring a friend!

Gail Sheiman and Carol Stamm arranged and hosted a ladies member-guest/guest-guest in October, an event that drew praise from all lady guests not only for the condition of the course but the fine effort and organization of Gail and Carol.

The Aiken Golf Club will hold its club championships the first two weekends in November with senior (55+) and super senior (70+) play on 4-5 November and the regular club championship the following weekend. The event is open to all members of both The Aiken Golf Club and Cedar Creek Golf Club. The annual tournament hosted by veteran Tony Venetz to benefit Wreaths Across America and honor veterans during the holiday season was won by the team of Bill Allman, Larry Thorne, Wayne Ussery and Mike Sparks. The team turned in a sterling 59 in the 4-man scramble.

The Fall Trifecta tournament is scheduled as usual the day after Thanksgiving (24 November). The two-person event is played as six holes scramble, six holes better ball and six holes alternate shot. Registration is open at the pro shop.

The battle for the 2017 Crystal Cup came down to the wire, but thanks to a strong showing from the ladies and the determined leadership of Captains Ann Marie Cox, Bill Hunkele and Lee Nightingale the Bluejackets prevailed to avenge the 2016 Redcoats victory. Redcoats Captains Sharon Eckert, John Moynihan and Bill Robinson led a good team but fell short of the win. Nevertheless, the Redcoats still lead the series 5 victories to 4.

Cedar Creek hosted the first round of the 2017 Aiken City Amateur Golf Championship, and the many who had the pleasure of playing the course since the 2015-16 renovation pronounced it a terrific new venue worthy of any championship tournament and promised to return for the 2018 City Am. Cedar Creek and Aiken Golf Club members who fared well included Dan Skiff who won the first flight of the regular division, Bo Crenshaw who placed second in the second flight of the regular division, Jim Price and Mark Kranjc shared second in the senior first flight, Bill Beck tied for second in the super senior championship flight and Cedar Creek resident Pete Srednicki came away with second in the super senior first flight. As highlighted on the sports pages of the both the Aiken Standard and August Chronicle, Patrick Cunning, a Palmetto Golf Club member, won the overall championship for his fifth victory in the eight years of the event.
September’s events concluded with a Community Golf Scramble on the 23rd, which was played as a fundraiser for a clubhouse renovation. Together with raffles and private donations the tournament netted more than $3,000. The design for remodeling hasn’t been firmed up yet, but basically the plan is to remove the wall behind the present bar and rebuild the bar in the underutilized “member’s room” thus providing more dining area space. Huge thanks to Michael and Andrea at the Grille for providing a great lunch gratis for all the event participants!

Community Golf Scramble Gathering
The remnants of Hurricane Irma left a trail of debris all over the landscape but thankfully nothing major – just a minor setback in everyday course maintenance work. With the growing season nearing end it is time to be particularly conscious about filling fairway divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. We’ll have much better playing surfaces during the cool (cold) months ahead with a little extra care. Gary and his crew are also preparing the course to maintain its excellent condition through the winter with sanding and fertilization of the greens, spraying and other work.
October will feature the Sadie Hawkins tournament, the companion of the alternate year Sammie Hawkins tournament. This year the ladies have the pleasure of inviting and playing with a non-spouse partner in the better ball of two event that always produces some exciting times and an occasional expression of wonderment as the couples marvel at each and the other’s play. It’s on the calendar for Saturday, October 21st. Signup is open at the pro shop.
